Haiti is located in the Caribbean Sea. It hosts more than 11 million residents. The country is divided administratively into ten departments, which are further subdivided into 42 arrondissements, 145 communes, and 571 communal sections. Haiti’s government consists of three branches: legislative, executive, and judicial. Its legislative branch is called the National Assembly, which makes laws and comprised of the upper house and the lower house. The executive branch carries out laws and comprised of the president, prime minister, cabinet members, and local elected executives. The judicial branch interprets laws and comprised of the supreme court and subordinate courts.
Haiti is known for leading the liberty and freedom movement in the 18th and 19th centuries, and is the first country in the Americas to win its freedom from colonization in 1804. Haiti has the second longest coastline in the Caribbean Islands. Its Dragon's Breath Zipline is the world’s longest over water zip line. Haiti’s Hôpital Universitaire de Mirebalais is the largest solar-operated hospital in the world.
Haiti’s national sport is soccer. Its national music is Konpa. Haiti’s signature cuisines include fritay, legim, soup joumou, makaroni o gratin, bouyon, tchaka, patties, and poul ak nwa. Its national festivities include independence day, flag day, carnival, Krik?Krak!, and rara.
Haiti’s main productions are apparels, vetiver oil, cocoa, coffee, bananas, and mangoes. Haiti’s top export companies are Cola Couronne, Cola Lacave, Handxom, Prestige, Rhum Barbancourt, Rhum Vieux Labbe, Surtab, and Toussaint Coffee Liqueur. Haiti hosts nineteen embassies in its capital Port-au-Prince. It has four international airports: Aéroport International Toussaint Louverture (Port-au-Prince, Ouest), Cap-Haïtien International Airport (Cap-Haïtien, Nord), Aeroport du Grand Sud (Aquin, Sud), and Antoine-Simon Airport (Les Cayes, Sud). Haiti's main attractions include its heritage sites the national history park of La Citadelle Laferrière, Palais Sans-Souci, and Les Ramiers, Musée du Panthéon National Haïtien, Labadie, Bassin Bleu, Saut-Mathurine, Dragon's Tail Coaster, Pic La Salle, Cadras Beach, Les Arcadins, Plain of the Cul de Sac, Heroes Monument of Vertieres, Kokoye Beach, Grotte Marie-Jeanne, Fort Saint-Louis, Pic Macaya, Place Saint-Pierre, Trou Caiman, Grann Do Beach, Lake Peligre, Massif de la Hotte, Parc Historique de la Canne a Sucre, Chaine des Matheux, Gross Roche Beach, Bureau d'Ethnologie, Bananier Beach, Rival Beach, Champ de Mars, 500 Marches, and Lake Azuei.
Haiti’s residents continuously struggle economically despite the country’s plentiful resources. Incessant riots and lack of social and personal accountability have inevitably led to security instability, capital disinvestment, human capital flight, corruptible and poor management of resources, infrastructure deterioration, and foreign aide dependence.
